Located minutes from downtown and easily accessible by public transit, on foot, by bike and other means, South Granville has always been a desirable area in which to live, dine and shop. Filled with a mix of longstanding and newer restaurants, boutiques, shops, salons, galleries and other businesses, the neighbourhood offers a range of experiences that make it a favourite destination for people from all over the city.

Spanning from West 5th to West 16th avenues, South Granville sits between Granville Island, one of the city’s most popular cultural and dining destinations, and Shaughnessy, one of Vancouver’s oldest and most affluent residential neighbourhoods. Both these areas provide beautiful and interesting scenery any time of the year, whether you enjoy taking in the sights in a spirited urban area brimming with energy and excitement or strolling on quiet tree-lined boulevards.

South Granville’s main high street is—unsurprisingly—Granville Street, which traverses the city and provides this central neighbourhood with easy walking, driving and transit access to all points north and south. In fact, South Granville is incredibly walkable, with one of Vancouver’s highest Walk Scores.

 

Outstanding food & drink choices

Home to a multitude of restaurants, cafés and grocers, South Granville is a food lover’s paradise. This well-appointed Vancouver neighbourhood is home to many popular restaurants that have deep roots in the community. The brunch scene boasts long-standing establishments such as Paul’s Omelettery and Caffé Barney. Baked delectables from Beaucoup Bakery (an Austeville partner), Small Victory and Marché Mon Pitou rival top offerings from Europe. The South Granville mainstay Cheesecake Etc. is home to many a late-night date. The Marquis Grill is a great local hangout for cocktails and hearty grub fare; The Stable House Bistro specializes in wine and charcuterie; Heirloom focuses on local vegetarian and vegan fare. These are just a handful of the many dining options available if you’re fortunate enough to find an apartment to rent in South Granville! 

Dotted throughout the area’s many restaurants, shops and art galleries, you’ll also find several independent grocers and delis for when you want to pick up food to take home, with a particular shoutout to Meinhardt.

Granville Island, while not officially in the South Granville neighbourhood, is a short walk away and much worth the trip. At its heart you’ll find Granville Island Public Market, which features a huge assortment of food shops and eateries, including fresh produce stands, specialty grocers, meat and seafood counters, plus sweet and savoury takeaway stands.

A shopper’s delight

It only takes about 15 minutes to walk from one end of South Granville to the other — if you’re not tempted to stop several times along the way to explore the array of fashion boutiques, home décor and furniture shops, luxurious spas, and all manner of art galleries. 

Renting an apartment in South Granville means living within walking distance to this fabulous mix of stores. Unique, independent local boutiques such as Misch, Bacci’s and Boboli rub shoulders with well-known retailers like Eileen Fisher and Max Mara. It’s a great combination that provides a diverse and interesting shopping experience.

But South Granville isn’t just about fashion. It’s also a destination for many home goods stores, including North American retailers like EQ3 (an Austeville partner), Pottery Barn, Williams-Sonoma and West Elm, plus long-time local standouts Atkinson’s and Bacci’s Home. 

Focus on the arts

South Granville is known for its many fine art galleries; in fact, the neighbourhood has the largest concentration of art galleries in Vancouver. Known as “gallery row,” South Granville is an interesting and inspiring area to explore.

The performing arts are also a major draw to the area. The anchor venue is The Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage — aka the Stanley Theatre — a Vancouver icon. Opened in 1930, the art deco building acts as South Granville’s primary landmark. 

Nearby Granville Island is home to scores of galleries, artist’s studios, art shops and a range of performing arts centres offering concerts, shows, plays and other entertainment. Notably, Granville Island is home to Ballet BC, Arts Club Granville Island Stage, Red Gate Revue Stage, The Improv Centre, Performance Works and Waterfront Theatre. 

Granville Island hosts the renowned Vancouver International Children’s Festival in June, Vancouver’s Fringe Festival in September and the Vancouver Writer’s Fest in October.

Accessible health & wellness

Taking care of your health and even pampering yourself is easy to do in the South Granville area. If you want to partake in strength training or a more intense aerobic workout, several fitness studios and personal training facilities are available in the area. A multi-kilometre long seawall is about a 15-minute walk from most points in South Granville and is perfect for walking, jogging or cycling alongside the scenic Pacific Ocean.

Spas and salons are also abundant in South Granville. Miraj Hammam Spa provides a magical and exotic spa experience at the north end of Granville Street. As you make your way south, there are up to two dozen salons, spas, and beauty treatment centres to help you look and feel your best. Notable spots include Project Skin MD and Suki’s, one of Vancouver’s perennially favourite salons.
