Zero Waste 2040

Recycling, organics and garbage

At Austeville, we are serious about taking care of the environment and are committed to Metro Vancouver’s Zero Waste 2040. That’s why we provide every suite with its own compost collection container, as well as equip our buildings with compost collectors and recycling bins alongside trash receptacles.

As an Austeville tenant you can help by keeping compostable goods and recyclables out of the garbage. Here are some tips to help:

  • Please recycle all mixed paper, cardboard, glass, plastics and cans.
  • Best practices include washing all cans and bottles, removing labels and flattening cans.
  • All food products – raw, cooked, plate scrapings and expired items, whether they are meat, bones, dairy or plant-based, are compostable and should be disposed of in your building’s compost bin.

Spring cleaning tips

You’ve probably noticed that we’re taking advantage of the warmer weather to spruce up your building’s common areas and outdoor spaces. If you’re looking for your own personal refresh for spring, here are four cleaning and organizing tips that will make your suite shine.

Be systematic: Spring cleaning can be overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be a marathon. Instead of tackling your entire suite at once, go room by room (or even drawer by drawer!). The smallest accomplishment will make you feel more relaxed and motivated to keep going. Commit to taking on one room per week; with just half an hour a day your entire suite will be sparkling in no time.

Clear the clutter: Most of us collect more stuff than we know what to do with. Take advantage of a rainy Vancouver weekend to go through your cupboards and drawers. You never know what hidden gems you might find! We suggest sorting your belongings into four categories: “put away,” “store,” “give away” and “trash.” This a great resource for learning where to donate used items throughout the Lower Mainland.

Prioritize the kitchen and bathroom: Wipe down the cabinet fronts and interiors; clean the sinks and faucets; go through your cupboards and fridge – compost/recycle/trash expired items; clean backsplashes; disinfect your garbage cans; mop floors; and don’t forget the doorknobs and switch plates.

Recipe for green cleaning

Austeville strives to be as green as possible. Why not start your spring cleaning by tossing the toxins for a healthier home? There are many environmentally friendly cleaning products on the market to help you create a sparking suite without dirtying the planet. You can get some amazing results with simple pantry products like coffee filters (excellent for streak-free screen cleaning), vinegar, baking soda and lemon. Here’s a recipe to make your own all-natural cleaner:

  • ¾  cup water
  • ¾ cup rubbing alcohol
  • 5 – 10 drops of your favourite essential oil
  • 1 squirt dish soap

Combine all the ingredients in a spray bottle and shake to mix. Spray onto surfaces and wipe with a wet cloth or rag.

Team Austeville

We ran in the Sun Run

Twenty Austeville Properties staff and friends braved the Vancouver rain to participate in this year’s 39th Sun Run. To prepare for the big event, Team Austeville took part in weekly training with a running coach. They had so much fun that they’re already making plans to do it all over again next year.
