Austeville Properties Ltd. makes it easy for residents to recycle organic waste

April 2, 2015 – One of the Vancouver’s most respected residential rental providers is helping its residents make the most of their organic waste.

Austeville Properties is rolling out an Organics Composting Program in its eight Lower Mainland rental complexes. Residents in every one of the company’s more than 900 rental suites will receive an apartment-sized organics starter kit that includes a collection bin, sample compostable bin liners and a detailed instruction booklet that explains the types of food and plant waste that can be composted.

Every building will be equipped with a compost collector in its garbage rooms, alongside recycling and trash bins.

“We’re already known for our top-quality and well-managed rental units,” says Austeville Property Manager Karen Penrice. “The organics program is just the latest of a number of eco-friendly initiatives we have introduced. Others include using LEED construction on all new projects and introducing energy-efficient appliances in all our rental suites.”

While Vancouverites who live in detached homes have been able to recycle their food scraps and garden waste at the curb for a couple of years already, most condo towers and apartment buildings have not offered these services until recently.

However, by this July compostable materials from all residential buildings in the Lower Mainland must be separated.

Austeville is enthusiastically supporting the new guidelines in its buildings, which are located in Vancouver, the North Shore and Burnaby. “We are fully committed to reducing the amount of waste in our landfills and lowering greenhouse gases while creating valuable compost,” says Penrice.

Residents in Austeville’s downtown Pacific Palisades towers were the first to receive the new organics buckets. Penrice says, “We’re making it as easy as possible for our residents to compost and they’ve jumped at the opportunity. I’m happy to say that at the Palisades all our tenants have really embraced composting. I expect it will be the same for our other buildings.”

Austeville’s organics composting program will be up and running in all its buildings by mid April. The company then plans on extending the program to its network of commercial properties.
